The prickly pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) is a species of cactus widespread in semi-arid and arid regions of the Americas, Africa, Asia, southern Europe and Australia. Opuntia maxima is a dark green shrub with thick, elongated to elliptical segments 30 to 40 cm long.

Prickly Pear – Opuntia, also known as nopales or paddle cactus, is a genus in the cactus family. Currently, only prickly pears are included in this genus of about 200 species.The genus is named for the ancient Greek city of Opus where, according to Theophrastus, an edible plant grew that could be propagated by rooting its leaves.
